The Codonics Safe Label System (SLS) 550i is used by anesthesia providers in the operating room (OR) to simplify complex OR medication and administration processes as well as help improve medication safety and Joint Commission labeling requirements by providing electronic medication safety checks as well as drug-specific syringe labels. Essential characteristics include the following:
- Verifies the drug and concentration based on an NDC scan of a vial/ampoule
- Provides visual and audible safety check to help reduce human error
- Simultaneously produces an easy-to-read, ready-to-apply syringe label that helps to comply with TJC requirements and ASA guidelines
- Medication labels include a barcode that enables integration with AIMS/EHR for electronic documentation at administration using SLS-WAVE
- Supports the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) recommendation to provide a mechanism at anesthetizing locations that identifies medications before drawing them up and administering them, such as a barcode reader
- Every SLS system can be monitored over the network to provide near real-time notifications for key events such as “Low Ink” or “No Labels” via the Administration Tool software
- Prints labels for IV lines, invasive monitor lines and other OR needs on demand
- Class II medical device
Compatibility:
The Codonics SLS is fully compatible with the BD Pyxis Anesthesia Stations which are maintained by Pharmacy and used to track medication inventories and expiration dates and to verify administration records.
Purpose:
Safe Label System may help reduce the three most common medication errors made in the OR:
Common error
Codonics SLS solution
Vial/ampoule swaps
Scans the drug container and asks for confirmation before printing the label
Mislabeling/illegible labeling
Provides TJC-compliant full-color labels based upon a site-specific pharmacy-developed formulary
Syringe swaps
Enables labeled syringe to be scanned to identify its content prior to administration
Generic Identification:
Codonics Safe Label System SLS 500i® Point of Care Station (PCS) is the standard of care
in the world’s leading hospitals. An award-winning, FDA-approved Class II medical device,
SLS improves the safety and accuracy of medication management and labeling compliance
anywhere medications are prepared. SLS utilizes barcode technology to read information
from a drug container and electronically identifies it against the pharmacy’s hospital-approved
drug database to reduce medication errors and create standardization.
